Second Chances Spotlight – New Beginnings Animal Shelter

This month for our Second Chances Spotlight we got to meet the pups and people with the New Beginnings Animal Shelter. Let me tell you, they have some seriously wonderful dogs (and people!) over there! Definitely check them out below. NBAS adopts out all breeds of dogs and cats (and all are spayed/neutered before being adopted). They were founded in January 2003 by Barb Byerly because there is a great need to pull dogs from high-kill shelters and adopt them into forever homes. There is also a great need to educate on no-kill, shelter reform, and pet over-population.

NBAS is a non-profit 501c3 organization, which means they need you to support them. One of the ways you can support them is through a monetary donation. Right now, they are trying to raise money for a physical location, so please consider donating today! Every dollar helps! Another great way to help them out is to volunteer with them. And of course, they have a wishlist that they would love for you to help them fill! On it: Postage for mailings, kitten food, dry or canned cat food, litter, cat toys, puppy food, & dry or canned dog food. If you have any of these items, please e-mail mail@newbeginningsas.org to arrange for drop-off.

Interested in one of the dogs below? Send an e-mail to adoption@newbeginningsas.org & let them know which pet you’re interested in meeting! Simple as that :)

Romeo & Juliet (ADOPTED) are 1-year-old Basset Hounds who have been with NBAS for 1 1/2 months. They’re not housebroken yet, but they’re working on it!! They are both fixed & good with dogs, not good with cats, & we’re not sure how they’d do with children. They both seemed fine with the children who approached them, but Romeo was very vocal when others would pet Juliet. These two are inseparable!  Romeo even protects Juliet if another dog comes around that he doesn’t like.  Cupid’s arrow has surely hit these two!  These incredibly smart bassets were found running along the side of the road.  NBAS tried to find their owner but no one stepped forward.  Oh, and don’t let those short little legs fool you … these dogs can run (fast too!)!  Romeo thinks they are lap dogs and when he is there, Juliet has to have the other part of your lap.  It seems that treats are a new thing for them.  They absolutely love them and it doesn’t matter what kind.  (Their foster parents sneak the healthy ones in on them and they never know).  New Beginnings would really like to adopt Romeo and Juliet as a pair.

Amelia (ADOPTED) is a 2-year-old Pit Bull who has been with the shelter for around a year. She was found on the roof of a home in Akron when she was around 1 year old. She was placed in a kill shelter, so she was immediately rescued! She loves to play fetch and give kisses! We just loved working with Amelia. She sat so nicely for pictures and just smiled and smiled! She even sat nicely when it wasn’t her turn and just waited patiently with her foster momma. She is a wonderful pup and you are missing out if you don’t take her home!
——————————————————————————————————————————————--
McCoy (ADOPTED) is a Pit Bull/Lab mix and you can tell by his smile (and the size of his feet & head)! He is about 9 weeks old and has been with the shelter for 5 weeks. This adorable little ball of puppy stole hearts all day long. He has a great little dog-ittude and just wags and wags and wags his little tail! He is definitely the definition of a rolly-poly puppy! This adorable little pup was pulled from death row. Can you believe anyone could hurt him? Well, now he is the happiest little puppy ever. Just look at that face! McCoy is growing and learning every day. He is cutting teeth and has a special fondness for vegetable chew bones.  Oh yummy!
——————————————————————————————————————————————--
Gwen (ADOPTED) is a Greyhound mix who is 6-7 years old. She has been w/ NBAS for 2 months & is spayed and housebroken. She is good with dogs & kids but we don’t know how she’d do with cats. She was spending her life tied out on a chain in a backyard when she was rescued. Her foster momma says she loves people, dogs, & hanging her head out the window on car rides! Gwen loves treats and will be very polite until it is her turn. She has fun with all of her new toys too and she shares very well. We are hoping that Gwen will have a great new forever home with another dog or two and an active lifestyle. We think she could out-hike, run, or roller blade just about anyone! Gwen will be ready with running shoes on to find her forever home.

Buddy (ADOPTED) is a Bedlington Terrier/Field Spaniel Mix who is 4 years old. He’s been with the shelter for 30 days. He is neutered and housebroken & is good with dogs, cats, and kids so there’s no reason to leave him in the shelter any longer! Buddy is the cutest little shorty you’ll ever meet! He stands not even a foot off the ground! He’s full of hilarious little dog energy and was all about getting petted. I don’t know how they get that much happy in such a small body, but it could be because he is finally in a happy place where he can just be a dog!  This beautiful little guy was pulled from a domestic violence situation.  He has a little scar on his face and his tongue is a little chewed but we think that just gives him character!  You would never know anything bad ever happened if you couldn’t see the physical scars, though; he loves to play and is active all the time!  His foster momma is working on a few basic commands and he is picking them up very quickly.  He’s fast and smart!
——————————————————————————————————————————————--
Leon (Now with another shelter) is a 3-year-old Pit Bull who has been with the shelter for 12 months. He is neutered & housebroken & is good with dogs and kids. He’s not good with cats. Leon was abandoned in a run-down house where he was left alone in a cage in the basement!  He’s perfectly well-adjusted and would fit nicely into a family willing to stimulate his mind and just let him be himself. Leon is all muscle on the outside & all heart on the inside!! He was my hands-down favorite of the day. He was so in love with our tiny squeaky toy and I just loved seeing the contrast between giant muscle and tiny toy. You can tell from his pictures that he is just a gentle giant … that face says it all! Leon loves to learn new things and think through puzzles and he is unique in that he loves to be in the presence of people without hogging all of the attention. He doesn’t have to be the center of your world … as long as he gets to be in it! Sure, he gets all wiggly and excited to see you, but he’s content to do his own thing as long as you’re nearby. Also, with his size, it’s probably best not to have him around children under the age of six years. So far, he hasn’t had a hard time making doggie friends but he really doesn’t like getting pushed around. With a mellow, non-confrontational dog, we think he’ll do great. Leon promises to be the best friend he can be!

Meet Shiloh & Jack (Now with another shelter)! Shiloh is a 3-year-old yellow lab and Jack is a 2-year-old black lab. Shiloh & Jack are great dogs who have been at the shelter for 9 months! They need to be adopted together. Shiloh is good with dogs, cats, and kids but Jack is not good with cats so they will need to go to a home without any kitty fur-ends, please! Shiloh just about killed me doing her “Sit pretty” command. It was fantastic!! She also has a little black spot on her tongue that I think is adorable. Jack is a good boy and a sweetheart as well. Jack is lots of fun to have around: he loves to be petted, he loves to run and play, and he’ll do a nice wiggle dance for you anytime! He’s a smart boy and he knows how to “sit”. He’s very treat motivated, and very people-centered, so you could probably teach him tons of tricks if you wanted to! He’d love to please you. Shiloh is lots of fun to have around as well!  She is not as bouncy as Jack but still loves to be petted, run, and play. She has her own special wiggle dance that she’ll show you! Shiloh is so happy that she actually smiles! This sweet dog loves life and is very excited to meet you. She welcomes attention, enjoys petting, and gets along great with other dogs. And if you throw a ball for her or take her for a walk, she’ll be your best friend forever! These two pups were taken from the same home who could no longer care for them.

Last but not least is Grizzly, the Black Lab/Jack Russell mix! He is 1 1/2 years old and has been with the shelter for 7 months. He is neutered and housebroken and is good with dogs & kids! We don’t know how he’d do around cats. He has a bit of a sad story behind his stumpy little tail: somebody chopped it off and he had to have surgery to make it okay again. You can tell by his smile that he’s feeling great now & it’s healed right up! He has some terrier in him & that was evident at the event … he spent a LOT of time sniffing the ground and tracking whatever it was that had been there before him! This always happy, treat-begging guy is about 30 lbs and won’t get any bigger.  He was found roaming close to Johnstown Road.  He was picked up and taken to Petlover’s Animal Hospital where they socialized him and got his body weight back to normal. He always wants to please and shows so many typical Jack Russell characteristics!  Grizzly would do best in a home with a fenced in yard due to high energy level.  He needs a job to do and would be great at agility!  Grizzly is the perfect package and really, REALLY wants to find his forever family and be somebody’s best friend. His video is here. Could you be the one to give him a Second Chance by letting this sweet guy into your heart and home to stay forever?

So many cute dogs. It’s nice to see some of them have been adopted already!

Let me know if you would be willing to feature 4 Luv of Dog Rescue’s dogs on your site. The rescue is in Fargo, N.D., and its web site is http://www.4luvofdog.org.
